Dear brothers and sisters,
Happy June! This month is always a time of great transitions as schools let out for the summer. For some, that simply means transitioning to summer activities. For others, greater transitions are in store with graduations and commencements.
But even as schools are taking breaks, we know that learning never stops. The same is true for Christian learning! Continuing our Christian education throughout our lives is an important part of discipleship. Learning about the faith, questioning and seeking answers with others, and being open to voicing uncertainties and doubts all provide opportunities not just for learning but also for growth. It is something that does not end when Sunday school and confirmation are over. St. Paul’s has wonderful opportunities for education throughout the summer.
Vacation Bible School is a great time for our children aged 4-sixth grade. This year our theme is Shipwrecked: Rescued by Jesus. VBS will be June 18-22, from 9 am to 12 noon. You can register a child through the church office. Even for those older than sixth grade, VBS can be a great time of learning and fun! We are always in need of volunteers, even if you can only come for a day or two of the week.
This summer I’m very excited to announce a new adult education opportunity. From July 8-August 26, you will have the chance to join in the discussion series Making Sense of the Christian Faith. We will meet from 11:00-12:00 on Sundays (shortly after the 9:30 service ends). This eight-week series by the Rev. Dr. David Lose explores the basics of the Christian faith from creation and sin to incarnation and atonement.
The course uses participant books, which can be purchased through the church office for $10. (It is also available for Kindle.) So, even if you are away one or two weeks this summer, you can still participate by reading the chapter in your book! If you have any questions about how to participate please let me know!
And of course our learning is not limited to formal programs and series. Often summer brings with it vacations and travels where we have the opportunity both to refresh ourselves and to have new experiences. Whether you are near or far this summer, may God bless you and keep you.
